Dal Tadka Recipe

Dal Tadka is often served in Indian Dhaba. It is also known as Punjabi Yellow Dal Fry Tadaka Recipe. Most often Indian Toor dal is used for the recipe, but you can either go for Moong Dal or Chana Dal.

Ingredients for Dal Tadka :

1 cup Toor Dal (Arhar Dal )
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tomato, chopped
4-5 cloves garlic, sliced (lahsun)
2 table-spoon oil
1 table-spoon coriander leaves, finely chopped to garnish (dhaniya patti)
4 cup water
salt to taste

Herbs and Spices :
2/3 t-spoon coriander powdered (dhaniya)
1/4 t-spoon Red Chilli Powder (Lal Mirch Powder)
1/4 t-spoon garam masala
2/3 t-spoon turmeric powdered (haldi)

For Tempering :
1 t-spoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
2 Dried Red Chillies
4-5 cloves garlic, sliced (lahsun)
1 table-spoon Ginger paste (Adrak)
pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
2 table-spoon Ghee (Clarified butter) 


How to make Dal Tadka :

  • Pressure cook dal with 4 cup water, turmeric and a pinch of salt, cook over medium-high heat for about 15 mins. or until Toor Dal gets tender.
  • Now, heat 2 table-spoon oil in a large frying pan, add onion and garlic to it. Cook for about 3-4 mins. stirring frequently. Add, chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook further on medium flame for 2-3 mins. Now, add all the spices.
  • After a minute add Toor Dal mixture and salt to the large frying pan and turn the heat to high, stir it well. When it starts boiling, turn the heat to low, cover the pan and cook further for 10 mins. or until the Toor Dal gets soften. Add garam masala.
  • Now, Keep this dal like this for 1 hour and then temper it.

Tempering Dal Tadka :

  • Heat 2 table-spoon ghee over medium flame and splutter Jeera in it. After 30 seconds add all the ingredients and stir continuously until mixture gets light brown. Turn off the heat.
  • Pour this tadka tempering in prepared dal mixture and garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve Dal Tadka hot with rice, pulao or tandoori roti.
